#1: End of the Line

"Fine day out today!"

"Oh yeah, a fine day. I guess you could say it's a fine day, if you leave out the fact that my eyelids are freezing together, and I'm certain I see an icicle hanging from your left nostril." Finnan bit off at the ship's captain, who looked extremely too merry standing behind the frosted helm.

"Yea yea. If that'll be all you're complaining, I've a wife back home who'd like to see me, sniffer and all. My crew had best be shoving off before nightfall, and you'd best be heading inside." The captain said, surreptitiously wiping at his nose and starting to call out to his men. Finnan already forgotten.

Finnan grumbled with frosted breath, stomping off the ship's deck and onto the icy pier. A frozen gust blew freshly falling snow into his eyes as he looked around. There was no one around except them. No other ships sat in the bay. No one outside at all. Strange.

Finnan thought about taking out his map to check the local landmarks against his, then thought again. The mere idea of taking out his hands from under his slightly warmed armpits was a death sentence for his nimble fingers, which he would likely need soon.

So, with hands stuck up his pits and snow finding perch on his eyelashes, he headed down the pier and into town. A small group of houses and shops huddled together around the frozen bay. Clouds gathered behind from the mountains, promising even worse weather tonight. Perfect.

With a sigh, Finnan stepped off the wooden pier, away from the ship that took him to this frosted hell, and would likely not come again until the spring.

He marched towards the only hospitable looking place in town, a small inn with a faded sign flapping in the growing flurry - The Yeti's Glee. Wonderful.

He stopped short of the door, looking back at the ship already departing the bay without its sails unfurled. Damned magic, and damned idea to come here in the first place.

But with the growing idea of what awaited him in the frozen peaks, he turned back and shoved open the door into the yeti's maw.
